Research summary
I am a woman of mixed race. I work as a systemic psychotherapist in a child and adolescent mental health service,(CAMHS). I have become increasingly aware of clients from a range of ethnic and cultural backgrounds presenting to the service with eating disorders. Eating disorders have typically been viewed as a white, female disorder.I want to find out more about these changing profiles with the view to increasing my understanding and improving my practice.I am interested in the experiences of the participants. I will take an 'appreciative approach', focusing on strengths, resilience and the resources the women have drawn upon in recovering. In particular, I am interested in the role their culture has to play in this. I hope to connect with hopeful, yet often subjugated narratives. I also hope to learn more about the sort of service intervention that would be considered to be the most helpful.
