  • Research summary

Heart failure is a common condition that reduces both quality and length of life. Blood tests show that people with heart failure have higher levels of inflammation and this is linked with a worse prognosis. \n\nMinocycline, an antibiotic used to treat acne, can reduce this low-level inflammation.\nIn this feasibility study, we want to find out two things: \n1) Can people with heart failure tolerate 3 months of treatment of minocycline? \n2) Can people with heart failure manage the various tests we plan to use? \n\nWe will recruit 10 people with stable heart failure. We will do blood tests to measure their levels of inflammation in the bloodstream. We will assess exercise levels by seeing how far they can walk on a treadmill. We will assess levels of inflammation in the brain by measuring nerve activity using a very fine needle in the leg (like an acupuncture needle).\nPeople taking part will take minocycline for 3 months and then we will repeat the tests.\nWe will use the information from this study to apply for national funding for a larger study to further study the effect of minocycline on inflammation in heart failure. \n
