Research summary
Low blood pressure is a common occurrence after spinal anaesthesia given to elderly patients for surgical repair of hip fracture, which can lead to heart and brain problems. There are 2 main ways of managing low blood pressure: treatment and prevention. Treatment involves the administration of intravenoufluds, drugs or both. Prevention involves altering the way spinal anaesthesia is administered. 2 main methods that can be used: reduce the amount of spinal anaesthetic given, and try to selectively anaesthetise the affected hip rather than both hips. We have found in an audit that there seems to be a direct relationship between the volume of local anaesthetic and the fall in blood pressure. This research has been designed to asses this effect in a more accurate and scientific manner.
