Research summary
Mini Gastric Bypass/One Anastomosis Gastric Bypass MGB/OAGB is relatively a new weight loss /metabolic surgery operation that is increasing in popularity and more than 60,000 operations are performed worldwide. Only 752 MGB operations are published from UK( Hussain et al.Obesity. Surgery.2018, C Parmar et al .Clinical Obesity 2016).
No previous RCT to date in the UK to test the new operation although RCT was done in Taiwan 2005 and showed that MGB is not inferior to the gold standard Roux EnY Gastric Bypass RYGB.
All bariatric/weight loss surgery type are associated with risks and mortality.British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society (BOMSS) approved MGB and was introduced in the UK as early as 2010. Although the mortality of bariatric surgery in the uK is about 0.14% ,recent study of Hussain etal of 527 MGB operations reported no mortality and superior outcomes of excess weight loss and type 2 diabetes remission compared to BOMSS data[2012-2016] .This research project is assessing the outcomes of this operation and opening the doors to understand its effects and how it works compared to the standard RYGB. The study is also assessing the T2DM remission, morbidity and mortality .The possible development in the project is to study the hormonal changes after the MGB and the long-term effects in subsequent studies.REC name
