  • Research summary

The UK Millennium Cohort Study is a multidisciplinary research project following the lives of over 19,000 children in the UK born in 2000/1. It is the most recent of Britain's world-renowned national longitudinal birth cohort studies. Each follows a large number of individuals born at a particular time through the course of their lives, charting the effects of events and circumstances in early life on outcomes and achievements later on.

The study has been tracking the Millennium children through their early childhood years and plans to follow them into adulthood. The six surveys of the MCS carried out so far at 9 months (2001-2), 3 years (2003-4), 5 years (2006), 7 years(2008), 11 years (2012) and 14 years (2015) have built up a uniquely detailed picture of the children of the new century and their families. The study is carried out by the Centre for Longitudinal Studies at the UCL Institute of Education, University College London. It is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council and a consortium of UK Government departments.

The next sweep of the study - to which this application relates - is planned for 2018 when the young will be aged 17. The data collection for the seventh sweep will be carried out by Ipsos MORI, a survey research organisation. It will involve home visits to the study families by professional survey interviewers. The 17-year old study member will complete a face-to-face interview, a self-completion questionnaire, a cognitive assessment, physical measurements, and consent to data linkage. They will also be asked to complete an online questionnaire following the
interviewer visit. Both resident parents will be asked to complete an online questionnaire, and one parent will be asked to complete a short paper questionnaire.

Please note that a different study title, 'Child of the New Century', is used for study participants.
