  • Research summary

The Millennium Cohort Study, known as ‘Child of the New Century’ to cohort members and their families, is following the lives of around 19,000 young people born across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland in 2000-02.

It is one of Britain’s world-renowned national longitudinal cohort studies, run by the Centre for Longitudinal Studies which include the National Child Development Study, the 1970 British Cohort Study and Next Steps.

The MCS provides multiple measures of the cohort members’ physical, socio-emotional, cognitive and behavioural development over time, as well as detailed information on their daily life, behaviour and experiences. Alongside this, rich information on economic circumstances, parenting, relationships and family life during childhood is available from both resident parents. The study provides a high-quality data resource for scientific investigations across a full range of domains of individuals' lives and across different points in time in them. The Age 23 Survey will add to this resource by updating information on current circumstances of the cohort and experiences they have had since the time of the last survey in 2018/19. Many of the questions and assessments are included in other cohort studies managed by the Centre for Longitudinal Studies and in previous Millennium Cohort Study sweeps.

The Millennium Cohort Study is a resource for the research and policy-making communities within the UK and elsewhere. The format and content of the follow-up have been developed in consultation with existing and potential users drawn from these communities.

The study is run by the Centre for Longitudinal Studies (CLS), at the UCL Institute of Education, University College London.
