  • Research summary

Midwives (lived) experience of providing continuity of carer in a small team clinical feasibility project.
Powys Teaching Health Board [PTHB] are currently exploring options for care that include improving the level of continuity for women and babies. Whilst the evidence base is good for recommending continuity of carer for women there is a notable impact on the working lives of midwives and issues with sustainability of those models which is not well documented in research. Powys has decided to carry out an 18 month pilot quality improvement study to test the applicability and sustainability of working in a new way. It is important for the pilot to not only recognise outcomes for women and babies but to also acknowledge the experiences of the midwives. Hence my aim is to use the data obtained through the quality improvement project to complete secondary analysis of the data exploring midwives experiences of providing care through the pilot study.

The quality improvement pilot will continue as normal; Midwives already writing down their experiences for the pilot evaluation through a reflective diary- and participating in 8 weekly project peer review meetings where peer discussion is documented. As part of this work PTHB will fund the research. The data supplied through this quality improvement pilot will be collected and anonymised by the researcher and used for secondary qualitative thematic analysis for the research study. The aim is to specifically identify themes related to midwives experiences. At the end of the project midwives will be invited to one informal interview; the identified themes will be shared; they will have the opportunity to clarify accuracy further identifying meaning. Themes identified will have an important influence on future developments not only in Powys but on a national basis as the research will be published and shared with policy makers.
