Research summary
Using a non-invasive video camera, we wish to evaluate the flow of blood through the small blood vessels on the underside of the tongue and, during the operation, the blood vessels on the surface of the liver. Videos will be taken prior to anaesthetic, once asleep in the operating theatre, and regularly throughout the operation and then once on the intensive care unit in the awake patient. A video of the liver blood vessels will also be taken during the operation. The results of this study will further inform us about how the body responds to surgery - in particular how flow through small vessels might be impaired when overall flow appears to be satisfactory.
