  • Research summary

This study will evaluate the Public Health England (PHE) funded Sport and Exercise Medicine (SEM) pilot being delivered in Oxford University Hospital (OUH). Researchers at Sheffield Hallam University (SHU) are evaluating the success of the SEM pilot. The SEM pilot involves embedding SEM within secondary care. OUH have identified multiple clinical pathways (e.g. critical care, renal transplant and cardiology) to pilot this in. Each clinical pathway will involve a different SEM 'intervention' (e.g. an 'active ward' or peer mentoring scheme). The evaluation involves exploring the acceptability and engagement with the SEM pilot within each of the pathways. This will be achieved by focussing on specific 'interventions' within the SEM pilot. The totality of the impact of the SEM pilot will be considered in a narrative discussion that brings together the results from each component of the evaluation.

The evaluation will have the following objectives:

    a) Explore secondary care clinician's and management staff's perceptions of physical activity promotion and SEM before the SEM pilot is delivered within the Trust.
    b) Determine clinical acceptability of SEM pilot for clinicians and patients.
    c) Identify what works and what doesn't work when embedding SEM in secondary care. For example, how well does it fit with existing services and the community physical activity offer.
    d) Understand the uptake of and engagement with the SEM pilot across multiple clinical pathways within secondary care.

A variety of data collection methods will be implemented including semi-structured interviews, surveys and audits. Information will be gathered from patients, clinicians, support staff and operations managers in order to meet the aims and objectives of the research.
