Research summary
Self-management programmes for asthma are known to be beneficial for asthma control. However, the implementation of asthma self-management programmes in clinical practice is low and, overall, patients’ adherence to self-management programmes is poor.
Mobile health (mHealth) encompasses the use of mobile phones and computer tablets for healthcare delivery. A range of sophisticated mHealth devices/tools are currently available, and many more are in the pipeline, which may assist patients to better manage their asthma.
We will conduct two focus groups with individuals with asthma and a single focus group with healthcare professionals, to determine their opinions of mHealth to support asthma self-management (Stage 1). The results from the focus groups will inform a questionnaire aimed at quantifying the opinions generated during the focus group discussions (Stage 2).
It is anticipated that the results of the focus group discussions and the questionnaires will be used to inform the next generation of ‘user-centred’ mHealth products designed to assist patients with the self-management of their asthma.
