  • Research summary

This is a qualitative study that aims to use semi-structured interviews to explore how shared decision making is accomplished among patients on methadone treatment programme. It is part of an MSc research project in Clincial Pharmacy and the student is a postgraduate practising community pharmacist.

The government guidelines recommend that treatment decisions should be made in agreement with the patient, and that there should be no decision made about a patient without their involvement.

The trigger for this research came from interaction with methadone patients who were dissatisfied with changes to their treatment. Some decided to use street drugs to supplement their treatment. This is not safe for the patient because of risk of overdose. And it is not safe for the public if they choose to inject and dispose of needles anywhere.

It is hoped that this research will identify areas to improve shared decision making and address any barriers to its implementation.

The participants will be recruited from a community pharmacy that offers methadone service. The interviews will be conducted in the consultation room at the community pharmacy, recorded and transcribed.
