Research summary
Having somewhere warm and safe to live is fundamental to our mental health and wellbeing - research has shown that those that are homeless, or at risk of homelessness, are much more likely to experience mental distress - a report by Homeless Link in 2010 (The Health and Wellbeing of People who are Homeless: Evidence from a National Audit) has shown that 7 out of 10 of clients had mental health needs and a third of those currently lack the support they need to address their mental health.
The Government’s Mental Health Action Plan ‘Closing the Gap’ has committed to investing in supported housing for people with mental health problems. We know that there are a number of good models already in existence that should be shared with commissioners and providers – we would look at mapping existing models of good practice that may be useful in identifying positive housing solutions for commissioners and providers. The research would deliver policy recommendations about how to address people’s housing needs by highlighting best practice and looking at preventative solutions.REC name
