  • Research summary

Young people with physical illnesses are at significantly greater risk of developing emotional and behavioural problems than the general population. Such problems not only impact significantly on young people and their families, but they can also have negative consequences for the management and course of the physical illness. Psychological treatments are highly effective but they are difficult to access. This research project aims to evaluate the impact of providing a friendly, accessible drop-in centre at the heart of the public areas at GOSH, where carers, and young people who are patients at GOSH, can stop by to get advice about emotional, behavioural and mental health problems. The centre is currently not an extension of an existing clinical service but if it is well received and effective then it will be incorporated into routine care. The drop-in centre will be evaluated in terms of (i) the number of people accessing such a service, (ii) satisfaction (iii) usefulness and, where possible, (iv) impact on health and (v) value for money.
