Research summary
The impact of living with obesity is well documented in existing research across a number of areas of society. However, most of the research to date in this area, has relied heavily on quantitative methods, revealing little regarding the lived experience of those living with obesity. Researchers have recently started to draw upon qualitative methods to explore the experiences of obesity from the perspective of the obese individual. However, this research has focused on women’s experiences of living with obesity. Therefore, there is little existing research that explains the in-depth experiences of obese men who attend weight management services. Research exploring the experiences of obese men would help health professionals working in the field of weight management further understand some of the issues and concerns pertinent to obese men. The empirical paper aims to expand upon the existing literature by using IPA methodology to explore men’s experiences of living with obesity. Clinical and practice implications will be considered, along with directions for future research.
