Research summary
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK, representing 15% of all new cancer cases. It is also the 4th most common cause of cancer death and the 2nd most common cause of any death in women. When a patient is diagnosed with breast cancer, they are often recommended to undergo breast conserving surgery to remove the tumour. Part of this surgery involves using different surgical techniques (known as localization techniques) to ensure that the full tumour is detected and removed correctly during surgery.
Currently, several different localization techniques are in use. It is not known which localization technique is the best and the recommended techniques differ not only between hospitals, but between countries too.
We wish to take part in an international research study to look at the success rate and feasibility of these different techniques. The project is known as the MELODY study which is led by researchers in Germany. Given the prevalence of breast cancer in the UK, it is important that we are represented in this important study. By contributing our valuable data from across the four home nations we may be able to aid in improving our knowledge and treatment options for breast cancer in the future.
