Research summary
To evaluate the use of elastography as a prognostic tool in predicting
symptomatic relief following carpal tunnel syndrome in patients diagnosed
with ‘Severe’ disease on nerve conduction studies. Forty consecutive patient volunteers with severe carpal tunnel syndrome referred to the West Herts Hospitals Hand Clinics under the care of Mr Read will under go pre op elastography (performed by Mr Timothy Eves) and complete the Boston Levine-Katz self-assessment questionnaire for carpal tunnel syndrome pre and post op to assess symptomatic relief. From these results we will be able to determine whether elastography can be used as a first-line,
well-tolerated, non-invasive, accurate and cost-effective procedure to screen for
patients in whom surgical carpal tunnel release will not gain any symptomatic relief.REC name
