Research summary
Understanding how we remember and store information is vital if we are to improve memory function in the many neurological conditions which present with memory impairments. Most memory studies tend to focus on the medial temporal lobe, but there are other key structures, e.g. in the medial diencephalon, that are also necessary for memory. Our knowledge of the function of these regions is however very limited. By looking at structural abnormalities in conjunction with cognitive functioning in patients with damage to medial diencephalic structures we can determine the role of these structures and how they contribute to memory. Furthermore, increasing numbers of neurological conditions appear to have co-occurring medial diencephalic damage, so understanding the pathology in these conditions can better help us understand the impairments observed and potential ways to improve cognition in these individuals.
