Research summary
Children born with serious heart diseases (CHD) are at risk of poor nutrition, slow growth and increased morbidity. Very few studies have looked at the vitamin and mineral (micronutrients) status of these children and none so far have explored how micronutrient deficiencies might influence disease progression. We will assess the frequency of micronutrient deficiencies in 50 children with CHD using standard and novel markers in blood. We will demonstrate that the novel blood markers are better to indicate body reserves than the ones currently in use. We will also explore whether micronutrient deficiencies increase the risk of complications after heart surgery. This study will identify any nutrient deficiencies that need monitoring in clinical practice. If an association between poor micronutrient status and post-operative complications is revealed, we will apply for funding to perform large scale studies to test whether nutritional supplementation can improve CHD prognosis and reduces health care costs.
