  • Research summary

This study is an observational, prospective, single-centre study assessing the implementation of a multispecialty robotic outpatient program in the national healthcare setting. Robot-assisted surgery uses the robotic systems to aid the surgical procedures, providing more precision, flexibility, and control than is possible with standard keyhole technique. Though robotic systems are already being used for outpatient procedures across the country and the rest of the world, there is a lack of robust evidence surrounding the benefits and cost-effectiveness.

Our main interests will be to evaluate the clinical, economic, and efficiency outcomes of this program. We will be assessing this by focusing on the delivery, (cost-)effectiveness, and the patient outcomes. We will invite all patients treated at our robotic outpatient surgery unit to participate in this trial, and estimate this will lead to 600-1200 inclusions per year. This study will not affect the surgical care for these patients in any way.

To achieve our main objectives, we will be collecting data from participants' medical records and asking participants to fill in questionnaires before surgery, and at 2, 7, 30, and 365 days after surgery. These questionnaires take approximately 5-10 minutes to complete. We will have one additional follow-up phone visit at 30 days after surgery, which will take approximately 5 minutes to complete.

After completing this study, we hope to have better insight into the potential benefits and applicability of a robotic outpatient program within the NHS. The ambition of this work is to increase knowledge on the use of robotic systems for outpatient procedures, and to improve standard of care for these patients.
