Data collection arrangements
The Caerphilly Prospective Study (CaPS) was set up by the MRC Epidemiology Unit (South Wales). Its initial aims were to examine the importance of blood fats, clotting factors and hormones such as testosterone, cortisol and insulin in the development of ischaemic heart disease (IHD). Subsequently, other hypotheses were included with a specific interest in psychosocial variables. With the ageing of the cohort, additional outcomes have been included in particular stroke, hearing problems, cognitive function and dementia. The data have been collected over decades and are very valuable for medical research collaborations to which we contribute such as the Medical Research funded Dementias-Platform UK (https://www.dementiasplatform.uk/).
Research programme
This application is to allow us to find out more information about our participants without contacting them directly as sadly most have now died or will be old and frail. This will be achieved by work with the NHS-Digital organization that hold information for England on all deaths, cancers and hospital admissions. In this way we can identify hat has happened to our subjects over the last decade and this will increase the value of the existing database. In addition, we will set up an application process that will scrutinise and decide whether to approve any new requests to use the database for medical research and ensure that this is done with due care and diligence whilst maintaining the anonymity of the participants.
