Research summary
This research seeks to improve understanding of the impact of mental illness within families, particularly how depression and anxiety of mothers affects their children. Medical research has suggested that poor maternal mental health affects the development and behaviour of children. It is likely that this, in turn, affects the mental health of children, their attendance at school and the qualifications they gain at school. What is less clear are the details of the processes by which poor maternal mental health affects the children. In this research, we are seeking to improve understanding of:
- how many children are affected by poor maternal mental health
- the incidence of mental health issues among different social groups
- whether unemployment increases the chance of depression and anxiety
- whether the timing of events associated with episodes of depression and anxiety have consequences for their children’s education.Linking health and educational records will help answer these questions and assist other researchers working in this area.
