Research summary
We know that certain chemicals (sterols) that are involved in making the lining (membranes) of cells in our body are needed by viruses when they enter our cells to multiply.
We think these sterols may be increased in people who have COVID-19 in response to the virus hijacking our cells. We can detect very small changes in these chemicals with special machines in Swansea University called Mass Spectrometers. If we can show differences in sterols between people acutely infected and recovered, from our existing covid biobank samples, we can help develop quicker blood tests to detect covid infections, monitor changes in the illness (biomarkers)and even develop future drugs to block important cell pathways the virus needs for replication.REC name
