  • Research summary

In this project, we will investigate the association between the level of mobility impairment and brain function of hospitalised older patients by analysing their brain electrical activity to determine if it is possible to predict the rehabilitation outcome. We will also explore factors that can impact the rehabilitation process, such as the general health status, depression, cognitive status, and whether there is a change in these factors after the rehabilitation is completed. This will be an observational, longitudinal pilot study assessing the feasibility of performing a larger investigation at Birmingham Community HealthCare NHS Foundation Trust (BCHC) and obtaining information on the distribution and effect size of the main variables of interest. We aim to assess 32 hospitalised older adults who present with different levels of mobility disability at West Heath Hospital over six months. Results from this study have the potential to contribute to a better understanding of factors affecting the impact of the current rehabilitation program to improve or restore the physical function of frail patients before discharge. It will also contribute to improving the management of frailty at NHS rehabilitation services by providing evidence to decide on better treatment plans while paving the way to personalised treatments. This study is a collaborative project between Aston University and BCHC.
