Research summary
Pelvic girdle pain or Symphysis Pubic Dysfunction is a common condition in pregnancy and affects nearly 20% women. Sometimes the symptoms can be quite debilitating and affect the quality of life significantly. Despite being so common, there is no evidence based best treatment option for this condition. Some of the treatments tried are physiotherapy and use of lumbar support belts but without robust evidence for their efficacy. One of the criticism of support belts has been that they provide support only to the back bone where as the pain is very often related to the pubic symphysis in front. We propose to study whether the use of a special flexible harness designed to support all the three joints of pelvis improves the pain severity and quality of life of pregnant women compared to those using the standard lumbar belts. We plan to test the hypothesis that use of a flexible harness specifically designed to provide support to all the joints of pelvis significantly improves the pain, disablilty and quality of life of women suffering with pelvic girdle pain in pregnancy by conducting a randomised trial.
