Research summary
After a bleed in the brain a patient may suffer from unexplained fits and seizures and be prescribed anti-epileptic medication. There are gaps in our knowledge of this subject; not much literature has been published specifically on epilepsy following a spontaneous ICH. This is an observational study looking at the management and longer term incidence of epilepsy or unexplained fits in UK patients who have suffered from a spontaneous ICH. Out of the 601 patients who were recruited into the STICH II (Surgical Trial in lobar IntraCerebral Haemorrhage) trial, 83 were from the UK. The population chosen for this study are therefore the 83 UK recruited patients. Their participation in the STICH II trial included a 6 month follow up. The patients were asked about whether they suffered from unexplained fits or seizures and whether they had been prescribed anti-epileptic medication. This new study seeks to find out the incidence and management of seizures/epilepsy between 1-6 years after their haemorrhage. The original 83 UK patients will be contacted with a consent form, information sheet and questionnaire and a stamped addressed envelope. The questionnaire will ask about the presence of seizures/epilepsy/unexplained fits (if any) following their ICH. If no response is received after 1 month the questionnaire will be re-sent. If there is no response to the 2nd questionnaire it will be presumed that the patient does not wish to participate. Any epilepsy medication they are taking will also be sought from their GP, permission for this will be sought on the consent form. The study will last 8 months and will take place at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
