Research summary
As survival rate of patients after colorectal cancer surgery improves, increasing emphasis had been put on the importance of the quality of life of patients after a cancer operation. Sexual function is a vital component patients' quality of life, although it is also an issue which is often not explored satisfactorily. Potential reasons for this could be embarrassment by the patients, a lack of knowledge of the clinicians on the topic, or its perceived unimportance due to ageism. It is also important to realise that certain patients are more at risk of this complications. Identifying these predictors could be useful when discussing managements with patients at increased risk.
This study aims to recruit male patients who were sexually active prior to surgery and inviting them to complete a patient questionnaire assessing sexual function. Eligible patients would have undergone either a cancer operation involving pelvic dissection which includes, high or low anterior resection, abdominoperineal resection, pelvic clearance or panprotocolectomy over 2010-2016. Participants will be sent a patient information sheet about the study, a consent form, and a questionnaire consisting of questions about patient characteristics and a validated questionnaire on erectile dysfunction.
Results obtained will be beneficial in identifying high risk patients which will enable a more satisfactory counselling session with patients.REC name
