Research summary
We want to improve the care of patients who present to hospital with a condition that may require emergency abdominal surgery. This can include making a quicker and more accurate diagnosis of the problem as well as better management plans that are tailored to individual patients.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a developing field in surgery, particularly in the field of clinical decision making. AI can be ‘trained’ using results from blood tests or bodily measurements such as blood pressure or heart rate, to recognise certain patterns that predict the chance of a particular diagnosis or how unwell a patient is.
The aim of this study is to interview patients and healthcare professionals to see what they think about AI and its use in healthcare. We want to explore the personal views and acceptability of AI particularly in emergency surgery and its use in helping healthcare professionals and patients to make decisions about their diagnosis and/or management plan. The study will help us to better design future research studies that are aligned to what is acceptable to both patients and healthcare professionals.
