  • Research summary

This research aims to develop an Implementation Plan for the Mindfulness for Adolescents and Carers (MAC) intervention should it be proved effective and cost-effective in the larger Adolescent and carers using mindfulness Therapy to END depression (ATTEND) study. This research is 1 work package within the larger ATTEND study which has 5 work packages. The aim of the ATTEND study is to understand if MAC might protect teenagers at risk of becoming adults with recurrent depression, resulting in damage to their life chances and future health.

This research has three phases which follow on one after another. The phases will be outlined below:

    Phase 1 (6 months)
Aim: To understand current mindfulness-based interventions used to treat depression in young people across England.
An online survey will be sent to CAMHS and third sector mental health services across England to scope out existing provision of MBIS.

    Phase 2 (9 months)
Aim: To develop of initial MAC implementation plan.
Feasibility data from the ATTEND PDG will be revisited, site implementation documents will be analysed and qualitative data will be collected from those providing the MAC training, those delivery the MAC intervention in the 4 pilot sites.

    Phase 3 (18 months)
Aim: To test and refine MAC implementation plan.
Qualitative data will be collected from those delivery the MAC intervention in the sites, and the YP and parent/carers.

The qualitative data collected in phases 2 and 3 will help us to understand the implementation of MAC, the barriers and facilitators to the implementation and inform the development, and refinement of the implementation plan. We will recruit participants from the 6 NHS sites implementing MAC as part of the larger ATTEND study. This research has no strict eligibility criteria other than working knowledge of the intervention and participation in the larger ATTEND study.
