Research summary
Lymphoedema is a condition of localized fluid retention and tissue swelling caused by a compromised lymphatic system. There is little to no research looking at post-arthroplasty complications in patients suffering from Lymphoedema. In general these patients are thought to have poor healing due to stagnation of protein-rich fluid. This causes tissue channels to increase in size and number, reducing oxygen availability. This interferes with wound healing. Post-operative wound complications and deep infections in Lymphoedema patients post total knee arthroplasty has been shown to be as high as 19% . (Alazzawi, S, Bardakos, NV, Hadfield, SG. Patient reported complications after elective joint replacement surgery are they correct. J Bone Joint Surg Br 2012; 94(8): 1120–1125)
We are looking at Lymphoedema patients who have had either a total knee or hip replacement and asking them to fill out validated questionnaires over the phone (Oxford Hip Score, Oxford Knee Score, SF12). This will help us assess the current St George’s Lymphoedema pathway and see if reproducible elsewhere.
