Research summary
This research involves a pilot study to assess the feasibility and acceptability of lung cancer screening using low dose computed tomography scanning (LDCT). Lung screening using LDCT has been shown in trials to reduce lung cancer mortality by over 20% due to an increase in the number of lung cancer picked up at an early stage, when the cancer is treatable and survivable. We would like to ask up to 600 eligible patients from 20 GP practices to take part in a telephone screening questionnaire to assess their lung cancer risk and eligibility for LDCT. Eligible patients will be offered a LDCT screen and notified if they need any further investigations or if their scan has shown nothing of concern at this time. All patients will be encouraged to contact their GP if they have any symptoms of concern and they will be offered smoking cessation advice where appropriate. We will provide a descriptive summary of patient numbers, eligibility for LDCT and LDCT findings, including diagnoses of lung cancer and histological stage of these cancers. A sub-group of health care professionals and patients will be invited to take part in a qualitative interview to explore their experiences of the lung screening pilot and perceived feasibility and acceptability. A financial cost analysis will also be developed for inclusion in a subsequent trial.
