Research summary
The objective of our proposal is to assess the feasibility of collecting blood and sputum specimens from patients undertaking the CT screening lung health check (lung cancer screening) program in West London and their validity for use in the development of laboratory based assays. These specimens will provide a means by which to assess the utility of such assays as a biomarker to differentiate between patients within the screening program with and without lung cancer. This will be important to clinical pathways to provide a tool that could be used to stratify further imaging and diagnostic procedures in patients with indeterminate CT scans in whom there is a potential risk to engaging upon invasive biopsy techniques. These patients are already participating in the Lung cancer screening pilot. This study will invite the patient to donate a blood and sputum specimen.
