  • Research summary

Laryngopharngeal reflux (LPR) is a condition where stomach contents go up beyond the oesophagus into the ear, nose, throat, mouth and airways. This leads to inflammation and troublesome symptoms including cough, breathlessness, sore throat, hoarseness and sour taste. Recently, biomarkers from non-invasive bodily samples, such as saliva, have become of interest for the detection of inflammatory and pre-cancerous or cancerous conditions. We aim to see if the biosensing platform Pandra, developed by Rosa Biotech, can distinguish patients with LPR from healthy volunteers due to expected inflammation and cell changes in the laryngo-pharyngeal (throat) region.

To do this, patients with LPR and healthy volunteers without LPR will provide a mouthwash (salivary oral rinse) sample, which will be analysed using Pandra. The study will take place at the Functional Gut Clinic, a non-NHS site, that sees patients referred for diagnostic investigations. All adult patients referred to the Functional Gut Clinic for reflux testing as part of their standard care pathway may be eligible to take part. The study also involves the use of questionnaires to determine reflux symptom severity and accompanying digestive disorders.
