  • Research summary

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness worldwide. The disease affects patient’s peripheral vision, otherwise known as visual field. Visual field testing is an important part of early diagnosis of glaucoma and monitoring change in the visual field is important to its management. Current standard visual field testing machines are not easily portable and come at a high cost. To provide glaucoma care to remote and rural communities with inadequate resources and to allow for development of future home-monitoring of visual field there is a need for visual field testing using light weight portable device such as the Apple ® iPad tablet computer.
Chief investigator has shown that a software on the iPad can be useful for screening for moderate and severe glaucoma in Nepal. Chief investigator also conducted a cross-sectional study in Melbourne Australia, where he found an more refined software (MRF, Melbourne Rapid Fields) has a high level of correlation with the Gold Standard (Humphrey Visual Field, HVF) test. The performance of the test across time however is not known.
The aim of this study is to investigate the longitudinal repeatability and validity of visual field test using MRF software on iPad compared to the Humphrey field test.

    Research questions:
What is the longitudinal repeatability and validity of visual field testing using MRF software on iPad over a period of 6 months.

    Relevance:
The results of this study will guide future larger studies that examines the use of tablet computers in detecting glaucoma progression.

    Eligibility:
Glaucoma clinic patient with stable glaucoma.

    Location:
    Addenbrooke's Ophthalmology Clinics.

    Method:
40 Participants will be recruited and then undergo visual field testing with HVF machine and iPad MRF software on four separate sessions; these are baseline session, 1 month, 3 months and 6 months after the baseline session.
MRF test results WILL NOT be used for patient management.
