Research summary
A previously REC approved study (ID 09/H1305/40) demonstrated that a preoperative supervised exercise programme improved cardiorespiratory fitness and postoperative outcomes in patients undergoing surgery for an abdominal aortic aneurysm, compared to standard treatment.
A recent departmental audit demonstrated that at 5 years post-surgery, participants who were in the exercise group, demonstrated a significant survival benefit compared the control group (p = 0.03).
We would now like to conduct long term follow-ups with these participants, to identify why patients in the exercise group have a significantly greater survival benefit, 5 years after the initial intervention. We aim to do this by asking all surviving patients to return for a cardiopulmonary exercise test, to identify if there is a difference between groups in terms of their cardiorespiratory fitness. We also intend to interview a sub-group of patients from each group to identify whether there were differences in their exercise and lifestyle habits following discharge.
