Research summary
The aim of this study is to explore, identify, and inform policy and practice about the level of contribution that primary health care organisations make to reduce and prevent health inequalities among middle/early old age people living with or at potential risk of long-term conditions.
The study will be carried out in four distinctive, but interconnected phases. In the first phase literature review will inform and clarify long-term conditions health policy and practice related issues and challenges, it will also help to develop and refine research questions and aims and objectives of the study. In the second phase, using Realistic Evaluation philosophy and by applying Interpretive Policy Analysis methods, a thematic analysis of the selected Scottish health policies will be carried out. This process will identify major themes; develop hypotheses and theories to establish understanding of the policy expectations from primary health care. In the third phase the developed theories will be further refined and tested by interviewing strategic and operational stakeholders to substantiate how inequalities are tackled, that is how policies are interpreted and programs designed, developed and delivered. Finally, a case study analysis of the Keep Well program will be conducted to explore and explain the practices, testing theories and comparing contexts, mechanisms and outcomes at different levels.
