Research summary
The emphasis of lifestyle-associated risk reduction strategies on diseases such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes is widely established, but recent National Institute for Health and Care Excellence 2015 guidelines stipulate the need for such an emphasis on dementia. Given the financial and societal burden of dementia, any gaps in knowledge regarding dementia risk reduction amongst NHS staff should be acknowledged and addressed. This current study, over an approximate period of 6 months, aims to ascertain existing awareness amongst recruited NHS staff members working within the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, regarding the influence of lifestyle-associated risk factors in preventing cognitive decline and dementia. This would help determine which lifestyle changes are in greater need of reinforcement as to their importance in risk reduction in both the patient and professional alike. The study will use questionnaires, individual interviews and focus groups in order to gather combined qualitative and quantative data, to help outline current understanding and awareness.
