Research summary
The use of regional blocks has the advantage of reducing the use of painkillers such as opiates during and post surgery. This reduces the side effects such as respiratory depression and drowsiness associated with opiates. We were always taught that the total dose of local anaesthetics matter more than the variation in volume and concentration, however there is very research showing that is really the case in regional blocks. Most of the research was in spinal anaesthesia which is different from regional blocks.
