  • Research summary

The objective of this study is to co-produce, test and pilot a video-based intervention about living donor kidney transplantation, to inform the Hindu community. The intervention will include a community ambassador training element.
Focus groups, consisting of stakeholders from the BAME Community, will help to inform our understanding of living donation from the perspectives of the donor, recipient and healthcare provider.
University ethics has been sought to undertake focus group exercise. The broader project will develop an information video, the content of which will be culturally sensitive and encompass motivational/ behavioural psychological theories. We will pilot the video for user acceptability and usability and later effectiveness. The video will be used to train regional community ambassadors.
Patients with renal diseases active on the national deceased donor kidney waiting list at Leicester and who may have potential living donors will watch the video with their social network (family and friends). Patients and their social network will be offered the opportunity to discuss living kidney donation with a trained community ambassador. Interested potential donors will be referred to the transplant team, and the number of successful living kidney donations will be recorded. The video will be made available for wider promotion of living donor kidney transplantation via online website and social media.
Thus, the project is to understand and promote living kidney donation in the BAME community in the United Kingdom. The impact of the digital intervention will be to overcome current barriers and increase knowledge and intentions of Living Donor Kidney Transplantation (LDKT), eventually leading to successful donations.
