Research summary
The impact of Covid-19 on health and society in the UK is affecting everyone. Although we know the disease passes from person to person, we do not know how much this is happening within households, nor what proportion of people have mild or even unnoticeable infections, or how much do they contribute to spread. Our research will increase our understanding of how and why the infection is spread in households and the community, and with this knowledge help plan strategies for control beyond the current “lock down”.\n\nWe will enrol 300 households (~1000 people) in Liverpool city region into the study. Each member of the household will have symptoms recorded and a swab from their throat at baseline and nose taken weekly for 12 weeks, to look for evidence of Covid-19 infection. We will teach participants to take their own swabs. Blood samples will be taken at the beginning and end of the study as an alternative way to look for evidence of infection. Participants will be informed of their results negative or positive. If a Covid-19 infection is detected we will increase frequency of sampling to understand how much virus is shed, for how long, and how much family size, dwelling place and contact patterns determine further spread. Participants will complete questionnaires over the 12 weeks.\n
