  • Research summary

The aim of this study is to build an understanding of how children and young people (CYP) living with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), experience the transition process. McPheeters et al., (2014) identified that research around IBD transition has lagged far behind that of other chronic conditions such as diabetes, cystic fibrosis and other young people with special health care needs. Whilst some learning can be gained from the experience of young people living with other chronic conditions, IBD differs from most of these conditions as the mean age of diagnosis is 15 years (Kappelman et al., 2007). This means that young people with IBD must undergo an accelerated transition process while at the same time may struggle to adjust to a demanding chronic illness that fosters feelings of vulnerability, embarrassment, lack of control and social isolation (Nicholas et al., 2007). The thoughts and feelings of the participants contribute to a deep understanding of lived experiences by exposing taken for granted assumptions about these ways of knowing (Starks et al., 2007). This is recognised as a gap in the current literature.
