Research summary
Children of parents with mental illness are ‘at-risk’ of a range of negative outcomes, which pose a challenge to services seeking to address their needs. The importance of representing their lived experiences is particularly heightened due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the associated changes they may have experienced as a result.
Aims: The current study will investigate the lived experiences of young people whose parents experience mental health issues, during the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Topics including self-identity, caring, coping, and relating with others, including mental health services, will be explored and contextualised within wider psychological theories, and clinical implications considered.
Methods: The study will utilise qualitative, 1:1 semi-structured interviews. The study design aims to provide opportunity for young people to collaboratively co-construct a narrative of their experiences.
Applications: The final work will be prepared for publications, presentations. It is hoped the findings will provide guidance for professionals working across child and adolescent, and adult mental health settings in relation to meeting the needs of young people living within the context of parental mental illness during the continuing and evolving COVID-19 context.
