Research summary
The overall aim of this study is to explore and make sense of the lived experience of six participants with toe amputation as a result of diabetes. The participants will be recruited from podiatry diabetes clinics. Data will be collected via semi-structured interviews. The resulting transcripts will be analysed using interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA). IPA allows exploration and understanding of subjective experiences resulting in an invaluable insight and understanding of how participants make sense of their experience (Griffiths, 2009). Taking into account lived experiences may enrich and inform existing research or may be a way to facilitate and guide clinical practice through consideration of the view point of the patient. Exploring patients’ personal lived experience of toe amputation as a result of diabetes related problems may be a way to facilitate and guide clinical practice through consideration of the view point of the patient. The support available and provided for patients may in fact be consistent with the perception of needs but currently there is insufficient knowledge of whether services and perceived needs are aligned. The process and findings of the research may help recognise and understand biopsychosocial perspectives. This study is an opportunity to gather richness of data about participants’ feelings, perceptions and behaviour relating to loss of toes due to chronic disease.
