  • Research summary

The Lived Experience of MRgFUS Study is a single-centre, qualitative study designed to explore patients’ lived experiences of undergoing MR-guided Focused Ultrasound for essential tremor.
Patients would have received this treatment at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust either as part of a clinical trial (The ET002E/ET003 trial) or in a commercial procedure. The ET002E trial recruited patients with medically refractory essential tremor, who underwent a unilateral (one-sided) MRgFUS treatment for essential tremor. Following this study, the procedure is now being offered on private patient basis. The ET003 trial is currently recruiting patients for staged bilateral (two-sided) MRgFUS treatment – patients undergo one procedure on each side of their body.
The Lived Experience of MRgFUS Study will use semi-structured interviews to explore patients' feelings about living with essential tremor, the experience of the MRgFUS procedure(s) itself (patients are awake during treatment) and adjusting to life post-procedure (improved functionality). The interviews are audio recorded and transcribed before being analysed to identify common themes. The study is part of an educational project and as such will run for a short period of time with all participants recruited from the above mentioned cohort of patients.
This study aims to inform how best to support patients before, during and after this relatively new treatment, and to identify implications for future research and clinical practise.
MRgFUS has potential applications in other neurological disorders and brain tumours. This project is an opportunity to voice patients’ lived experience and allow their perspectives to shape the establishment of a new service.
