Research summary
There is still no consensus on the best approach for the management of synchronous
colorectal liver metastases (CRLMs). The most used approach is a minimally invasive (MI) two-staged resection wherein a colorectal resection is followed by a liver resection at a later stage. In recent years, an alternative surgical strategy has been introduced. This involves a MI combined resection of liver metastases and the primary colorectal tumor. However, whether MI combined liver and colorectal resection could be performed safely and efficiently remains unclear. Evidence is limited to two retrospective comparative studies and to date, a randomized controlled trial regarding this subject is lacking.
The aim of the current study is to assess whether MI combined liver and colorectal
resection for CRLMs and primary colorectal tumor can result in shorter time to functional recovery and hereby results indirectly in a lower postoperative complication rate compared to the MI two-stage colorectal resection for the colorectal primary cancer followed by MI liver resection for CRLMs or vice versa.REC name
