Research summary
The National Health Service (NHS) is one of the largest employers in the United Kingdom. It aims to create a culture of compassionate leadership, focussed on staff wellbeing. Work-related stress is found across all levels of the workforce. Stress, over long periods of time, can be harmful to physical and mental health as well as performance at work. This could be potentially dangerous in the health service, for example making mistakes with medication. Mindfulness and music listening have been found to be effective tools to reduce stress and improve wellbeing and thinking skills in and out of the workplace. This research is looking at if the two tools can be combined; mindful music listening, and if this can be an effective tool for stress management, improving wellbeing and thinking skills for NHS managers. This will involve managers listening to music over eight weeks, in a mindful way. Assessments of stress, wellbeing and thinking skills will be taken before and after this. The findings from this study could help to develop a tool which is low-cost, enjoyable and easy to access.
