  • Research summary

A stoma is an opening on the abdominal wall formed from a piece of bowel to allow drainage of faeces or urine into a bag which is stuck around the stoma. Patients may need a stoma for different reasons including bowel or bladder cancer and inflammatory bowel conditions such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis. Some patients may have to live with a stoma for the rest of their life. They can sometimes be difficult to look after and the contents may leak from the bag, which is unpleasant for the patient and affects their quality of life. When the stoma is first made by the surgeon the skin surrounding it is flat and the stoma bag should stick well so there is no leakage. However scar tissue forms which may take a year or longer. The scar tissue surrounding the stoma may make the skin lumpy rather than flat making it difficult to stick the stoma bag well and lead to leakage of the contents.

Lipomodelling, or fat transfer, means removing fat from one area of the body by suction and then putting in another part of the body by injecting so it. Lipomodelling has been used to correct skin defects in other areas of the body such as breast, buttocks and genitals.

This study is looking to see if using fat transfer to improve the skin defects around the stoma (peristomal lipomodelling), the stoma bag will be able to stick properly, lead to less leakage and therefore improve quality of life. Some patients also need extra appliances to help the stoma bag stick. Hopefully with fat transfer these appliances will no longer be required and therefore save money in the long term.
