Research summary
High levels of cholesterol in blood can build up on the lining of your blood vessels leading to their narrowing and eventual blocking. This is known as atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is a very common condition amongst the general population with people over the age of 40 having a 50% chance of developing serious atherosclerosis that can cause dangerous forms of cardiovascular disease such as strokes, heart attacks, and coronary artery disease. Additionally, this study also aims to look at the current range of tests available for patients with high cholesterol, and whether or not these can be improved upon. Current guidelines suggest measuring non-HDL cholesterol as well as lipoprotein a, Lp(a), and apolipoprotein B (ApoB) which could be implemented with help from the Cardiology department.
