  • Research summary

This project asks participants to speak about their experience of undergoing brain surgery for removal of brain tumour, whilst being awake (an awake craniotomy procedure). Previous research has indicated that whilst some cope well with this unique type of surgery, others feel anxious and have vivid memories of their experiences in the operating theatre. This study has a longitudinal design - we will interview people on three occasions (before surgery, two days to two weeks post surgery and six to ten weeks post surgery). It is hoped that when we learn more about how people feel before, during and after brain surgery whilst awake, we will be able to use this information to help prepare people better and give high quality psychological care to others in the future. We aim to understand how people feel, their thoughts and beliefs about the awake craniotomy procedure and how participants make sense of their experiences over time. Participants will be identified by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde neuropsychology services, aged over 18 years and who are scheduled for an awake craniotomy procedure. Only those who have the capacity to consent to undertaking three 30 to 45 minute interviews will be included in the study. Participants identified as suitable for awake brain surgery will be approached by NHS clinicians in the service and given information about this research. Interviews will take place face to face in NHS clinics or remotely (MS Teams). Informed consent will be obtained, participants will be given multiple formats of information about the study and offered a summary of the results upon completion of the project. A report of the study will be deposited on Enlighten (University of Glasgow), submitted for publication and disseminated via conference presentations.
