Research summary
The aim of this qualitative study is to understand the existing processes, procedures and cultures of three hospital sites in England where patients are receiving specialist weight management services including assessment for bariatric surgery. The information we learn from this study will be used to inform the design, and development and implementation of possible future clinical trials.
This study will investigate the prevailing cultural context at each site to understand what barriers to implementing a clinical trial might exist, and what factors may support its implementation. To do this, the research team will shadow a member of staff and conduct observations of important encounters between staff, and patients, and of the surrounding areas (e.g. staff rooms, patient areas). The researcher will also hold 30 minute interviews with key staff—identified in the course of shadowing—about their experience and perspective on the culture of their workplace. These will be supplemented with 30 minute interviews with patients about the care they have experienced. Taking these data sets together it will give us a good picture of the existing systems and procedures, informal organisational structures and culture.REC name
