Research summary
Catheter ablation of the atrioventricular node is an accepted and highly effective treatment strategy in atrial fibrillation patients to improve symptoms and to achieve 100% pacing in patients with cardiac resynchronisation devices.
Ablation of the atrioventricular node can be achieved using two approaches; a right-sided approach or a left sided approach.
Right-sided atrioventricular node ablation has been the initial conventional approach however a proportion of patients require switching to a left sided approach or have a challenging procedure.
Performing left sided ablation as first choice in previous studies has been shown to have a higher success rate, reduced procedure time and less radiation exposure than the right-sided approach.
This study is a randomised controlled study comparing the efficacy of both approaches.
